There are many reasons why people get cancer. Heredity plays a major role and so do environmental factors. Different types of cancer have different risk factors. However, it is possible to reduce the chances of getting cancer by taking some precautions and living a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some ways to reduce the chances of getting cancer:

– Avoid exposure to carcinogenic (i.e. cancer causing agents) substances such as formaldehyde, benzene, asbestos and many others. For the most part, try to avoid automobile fumes and similar air impurities.

– Quit smoking. Besides getting you some yellow teeth, smoking causes cancer. Not smoking is one of the most important health decisions you can make. It can reduce your risk of several cancers, including lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, bladder, kidney, pancreas, cervix, and stomach. Tobacco smoke contains more than 60 cancer causing substances.

– Get your immunizations. Certain cancers are associated with infections that can be prevented with shots. Hepititus B can increase your risk of liver cancer and HPV (Human papillomavirus) can lead to cervical cancer.

– Eat a variety of healthy foods. While this isn’t a guarantee, a healthy diet can reduce your risk of getting certain types of cancer. According to the Mayo Clinic, about 30% of cancers are related to issues of nutrition, including obesity.

Other than these, take adequate exercise and lead a healthy life.
